VALPARAISO | Porter County Councilman Jim Polarek filed for re-election Thursday.

Polarek, R-4 th, represents southern Porter County as well as Washington and Union Townships.

Polarek said he has worked for fiscal stability in the county, having voted for a budget that cut county spending by 5 percent and one budget that froze spending levels.

He voted against the 2014 county budget that calls for spending above projected revenue levels.

Polarek said he has worked with other county officials to improve emergency radio coverage in southern parts of the county and to purchase 63 acres of land for a new county park on Ind. 49 north of Kouts.

He has also worked on a project to secure a $200,000 grant for the town of Kouts to extend sewer and water lines north of the town along Ind. 49.

Polarek currently has no opponent in the Republican primary. Filing for the primary ends Friday. Currently, Don Ensign is the only Democratic candidate for the council District 4 seat.
