PORTAGE | A 19-year-old Brownsburg, Ind., man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly stealing alcohol, munchies and condoms from the Portage Walmart.

The suspect, Eric Jarnecke, told police he was dropped off at the Walmart, 6087 U.S. 6, after midnight by some friends. He allegedly took two bottles of Crown Royal, a bag of Doritos, a bag of Sun Chips, a box of cookies, a "Naked" fruit smoothie and a 24-pack of condoms from the store.

On leaving Walmart, Jarnecke discovered his friends gone. So he walked to the nearby McDonalds and asked three male patrons for a ride home with the stolen merchandise. They refused, but gave him a ride back to the Walmart, then went to the Meijer, where they decided to call police.

The three returned to the McDonalds where they saw Jarnecke inside. As they were calling police, Jarnecke came out and tried to get in the car. Police arrived about that time and chased Jarnecke across U.S. 6 and around the Meijer gas station before a second officer arrived in his patrol car and helped catch Jarnecke.

Jarnecke registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.10 and was taken to Porter County Jail on charges of theft, resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and minor consumption of alcohol. The stolen items, which had a total value of $82.26, were recovered.
