Man marking underground utilities struck by car

VALPARAISO | A man who was marking underground utilities along northbound Calumet Avenue, just north of Burlington Beach Road, was struck by a car driven by an elderly woman about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Valparaiso police and firefighters responded to the scene and determined the man who was struck suffered life-threatening injuries. The man was taken by ambulance to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, where he was in critical condition, said Valparaiso police Sgt. Michael Grennes.

The man's truck, a company truck belonging to SM & P Utility Resources, was parked a short distance away from where he was struck.

Grennes said the man was struck by a 92-year-old Valparaiso woman who was northbound on Calumet Avenue. Grennes said the crash remains under investigation.
