CHESTERTON | More than 2,000 NIPSCO customers in the Chesterton area were left without power Tuesday night.

Kathleen Szot, spokeswoman for NIPSCO, said a mechanical issue Tuesday afternoon caused the power outages. She said the problem was isolated to the Chesterton area.

By 7:30 p.m., there were 530 customers who were still without power, according to NIPSCO's website.

Crews planned to work overnight to restore power.
