Five complete basic training
Army Pvt. Keiquan Brown Jr., Army National Guard Pfc. Jean M. Byrd, Army National Guard Pvt. Neil A. Crunkleton, Army National Guard Pvt. Jack G. Graeber and Army National Guard Pvt. Dakota C. Akins have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldiers studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Brown is the son of Tanisha Taylor, of Hazel Crest. He is a 2011 graduate of Thornwood High School, South Holland.
Byrd is the daughter of Robert Byrd, of Hammond. She is a 2012 graduate of Morton Senior High School, Hammond.
Crunkleton is the son of Rodney and Jennifer Crunkleton, of Valparaiso. He is a 2012 graduate of Morgan Township High School.
Graeber is the daughter of Luke Graeber, of Westville. She is a 2012 graduate of Westville Middle-High School.
Akins is the brother of Bobbi Burns, of New Chicago.
Diaz completes military training
Air Force Airman Gabrielle E. Diaz graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Diaz is the daughter of Kimberly Santmyre, of Titusville, Fla., and niece of Tami Parish, of Dyer. She is a 2012 graduate of Lake Central High School.
