Six complete basic training in South Carolina

Army Pvt. Freeman C. Burroughs, Army National Guard Pvt. Russell B. Cole II,  Army Pfc. Catherine A. Marich, Army National Guard Pfc. Brianna A. Spiller, Army Pvt. Johnathan Hurdle and Army Pvt. Shannon R. Palmer have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldiers studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Burroughs is the son of Beverly Burroughs, of South Holland, and nephew of Patricia Seals, of Palatine. He is a 2012 graduate of Thornwood High School, South Holland.

Cole is a 2011 graduate of Merrillville High School.

Marich is the daughter of Daniel and Sharon Marich, of Demotte, and grandson of Dave and Judy Marich, of Hebron. She is a 2011 graduate of Kankakee Valley High School, Wheatfield.

Spiller is a 2012 graduate of Thornwood High School, South Holland.

Hurdle is a 2009 graduate of Thornwood High School, South Holland.

Palmer is the son of Rose Palmer, of Calumet City. He is a 2010 graduate of Thornridge High School, Dolton.
