Wiggins completes basic training

Navy Seaman Recruit Anna M. Wiggins, daughter of Rosa M. Diaz-Wiggins, of Hammond, and David L. Wiggins, of Lansing, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes.

During the eight-week program, Wiggins completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Wiggins is a 2010 graduate of Thornton Fractional South High School of Lansing.

 

McClay graduates from basic training

Air Force Airman Antonio McClay graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

McClay is the son of Anton McClay, of Merrillville, and Erika Grach, of Highland.

He is a 2012 graduate of Merrillville High School.

 

Tonello completes phase training

Navy Seaman Apprentice Nicholas E. Tonello, son of Lisa M. and Anthony J. Tonello, of Hobart, participated in a change of command onboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99), Naval Station Mayport, Fla.

Tonello and other Sailors recently completed its basic phase training, composite training unit exercise with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, and 2012-2013 deployment to the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation. Farragut returned from its 10-month deployment in April of this year. Farragut was also awarded the Battle "E" for displaying excellence in the areas of maritime warfare; engineering and survivability; and command, control, communication and information warfare.

Farragut is entering a summer-long maintenance period at Naval Station Mayport.

Tonello is a 2008 graduate of Wheeler High School and joined the Navy in March 2011.
