VALPARAISO | The city is in the market for a new economic development director.
Matt Murphy, who has held the position since 2007, is leaving at the end of the month to lead Jifco Products Inc., a family-owned CNC precision machine shop on Brown Street in Valparaiso. He will continue to serve on the city's Board of Public Works and Safety.
"It's an opportunity that came up through the family recently," Murphy said. "I've been looking at it for a few weeks. I really enjoyed my time with the city. It was an incredible experience. Just being part of the whole transformation of the city has been a blessing."
Although he worked in a steel mill before joining the city, he said the new post is a different type of manufacturing, and he will have "a big learning curve." Instead of trying to bring new businesses to town, he's going to be heading a new one.
"Being economic development director, I got a chance to see all the different types of companies we have, and I really have an appreciation for what they do. It's neat that I can stay active in the business community. It's the backbone of the community, and I'm excited to join their ranks."
Mayor Jon Costas said, "We're grateful to Matt for his contributions to our city as economic development director. We're also pleased that he will remain in our city, leading a positive employer and continuing to serve on our board of works. Economic development is a key position within our city, and we'll take our time in exploring candidates to fill this role."
