NEW BUFFALO, Mich. | The Stray Dog Bar & Grill, popular among locals and tourists from across the region, was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

Owner Marc Danesi plans to reopen and has already contacted his architect.

"We'll start rebuilding as soon as we can," said Danesi, who also owns Enzo, an Italian restaurant in downtown LaPorte.

"I can probably redo this in nine months," he said.

Nearly 200 people were employed at The Stray Dog, which caught fire Tuesday evening.

New Buffalo firefighter Jack Kennedy said there were customers on each level and the fire rapidly spread but everyone made it outside without injury.

Barb Brandys, manager of Knoll Brothers gas station, said The Stray Dog was right up there with Redamak's, another local destination restaurant, in terms of name recognition and popularity.

"It's been the definite talk of the town. It's quite upsetting for those who live here," Brandys said.
