INDIANAPOLIS | State Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Ogden Dunes, was honored as a "Small Business Champion" Monday by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

The award, recognizing lawmakers who support economic growth and job creation policies that benefit small and growing companies, is presented annually to a Republican and Democratic member of both the Indiana House and Senate.

Tallian, the only Northwest Indiana lawmaker to be selected this year, said she appreciated being honored for her efforts to work across party lines for the good of Hoosier businesses and the state.

"A lot of times people just see me as the labor spokesperson ... but this is a recognition that business and labor are mutual sides of what we all do in this country," Tallian said. "Without business, labor has no jobs; and without labor, business has no customers."

Tallian, an attorney, has represented northern Porter and LaPorte counties in the Senate since 2005. She is the top Democrat on the appropriations and the pensions and labor committees.

She also is the Senate Democratic representative on the powerful State Budget Committee.
