One person died in a single vehicle, fatal crash Saturday night on U.S. 6 at Ind. 49.

Initial investigation shows a 1999 GMC Suburban, with one occupant, was traveling westbound on U.S. 6 in the right lane passing traffic. As the vehicle went over the overpass just before the exit ramp of Ind. 49, the vehicle went off the roadway to the right first striking the metal guard rail then continuing on, striking a traffic light pole.

The driver was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

Assisting with the investigation and road closure are the following agencies: Chesterton Police Department, Indiana State Police, Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department, Porter EMS, Joe’s Towing and the Porter County Coroner’s Office.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification. Routine toxicology results will be pending.
