PORTAGE | Work is continuing at the Porter Portage Hospital Campus to double the number of operating rooms at the facility.

The Development Review Committee on Tuesday approved a site plan for a 1,700-square-foot addition to the Willowcreek Road hospital.

Chief Operating Officer William Cummins said the facility currently has two operational operating rooms. An expansion in 2005 provided a shell for two more operating rooms to provide outpatient surgery.

The newest phase of the project will open those two additional operating rooms and provide space for support services, including pre-op and post-op beds along with a new family waiting room.

Andrew Moats of Design Organization said construction should begin in late July and finished early in 2011.

"We are in the process of continuing our commitment to Portage by expanding our OR beds from two to four," Cummins said, adding they hope the project will attract additional physicians, not only from Porter County, but from Lake County.

The hospital provides ambulatory surgery services.
