PORTAGE | Andy Maletta was approved as the newest member of the Portage Township School Board in a brief meeting Wednesday night.

Maletta, who currently serves as president of the Portage Township Advisory Board, will replace Bill Fekete, who resigned last month because he was moving from the area.

Maletta will have to resign his post on the advisory board before being sworn in as a school board member, School Board Attorney Ken Elwood said.

Maletta is a marketing manager for a local beverage company and son of former Portage Mayor Sammie Maletta. He was one of 10 residents submitting letters of interest for the position.

Member Jessica Bailey said she was impressed with Maletta during the interview because he came two hours early, stayed for all the interviews, has read the bylaws and has previous board experience.

"He will be able to hit the ground running," she said.
