PORTAGE | Foot-long bacon-wrapped hot dogs, bacon cheddar soup and bacon-laden cheeseburgers will be among the stars showcased at Bacon Fest Portage this coming weekend.
The festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Founder's Square Park, just north of Central Avenue and west of Hamstrom Road, will be a tribute to both bacon and the community, said co-founder Danny Hendon.
The festival is being organized by Hendon, along with his father, Mike Hendon, who is senior pastor of Victory Christian Center, and Mike Signorelli. Both the junior Hendon and Signorelli work at the church.
"We are doing this as a community event. We are just trying to do something cool and fun for the community," said Danny Hendon, adding the idea to wrap the festival around bacon came after Signorelli had a dream about the pork product.
Hendon said more than 30 vendors are expected to attend. Some are offering food, others arts and crafts. The Portage Police canine unit also is expected to attend.
Bouncing Around, another festival sponsor, will bring inflatables from a 60-foot obstacle course to giant slides to the festivities.
Buffalo Wild Wings will sponsor a flag football tournament.
Hendon said there will be live music throughout the day, including the bands Fathom Blue and Penny Down.
The music, inflatables and parking are free of charge.
