PORTER COUNTY | The Porter County Substance Abuse Council has announced this year’s Red Ribbon Scholarship winner is Ashley Barnas, a senior at Portage High School. Her work as a leader comes from her attendance at a Natural Helpers program and through her decision to be drug-free. Tim Kunstek, Director of Student Services and Porter County Substance Abuse Council Board member said, “We commend her work and pursuit of excellence. Ashley shows each and every day her Portage Pride! PHS is very proud of her.”
This scholarship has been given out each year for the last 20 years. It is a $500 award for a Porter County student who actively exhibits the benefits of living a drug free life. Winners have the monies applied to their college of choice.
Applicants are reviewed based on active involvement in student related activities that promote a drug free lifestyle, recommendation letters from faculty and a loved one and a written essay about how a drug free lifestyle has influenced the student’s life.
The Porter County Red Ribbon Campaign is part of the Porter County Substance Abuse Council is dedicated to working for a drug-free Porter County. The Council successfully collaborates with treatment facilities, education providers, members of the justice community and concerned citizens. A member of the Governor’s Commission for a Drug Free Indiana, the Council is in its 25th year providing funding to the community.
