PORTAGE | The Utility Services Board took the next step in resolving a decades-long drainage problem in one area of the city Wednesday.
The board opened bids for the reconstruction of the intersection of Sylvannia Street and Broughton Avenue in Savannah Heights. The bids, taken under advisement, were sought to alleviate a drainage problem in the area. The original estimate for the project was $125,000.
The bids were from Reith Riley construction of Gary for $179,875; DeBoer Egolf Corp. of Portage for $117,432; RV Sutton of Chesterton for $113,340; Gough Inc. of Merrillville for $139,037; Olthoff of Chicago Heights, Ill., for $130,121 and Gariup Construction of Gary for $132,121.
In other business, the board approved hiring OW Krohn Associates of Westfield, Ind., to conduct a study looking at both capacity and tap-on fees. The study could be completed within a month.
