PORTAGE | The Portage Yacht Club will likely be a memory by the end of spring.
The Redevelopment Commission on Wednesday opened bids from a dozen companies looking to tear the building down. The bids ranged from just under $100,000 to nearly $190,000 for the work.
City officials decided last year that significant work needed to be done at the building to bring it up to standards. The building has been managed by the city's park department in recent years as a rental facility. It was purchased by the city several years ago. The building, just off Ind. 249 north of Interstate 94, was originally used as a club for employees of the former Midwest Steel Corp.
The dozen bids were taken under advisement. The commission likely will award a contract at its March 27 meeting. The contractor chosen will have 90 days to complete the demolition once it receives a notice to proceed.
Contractors submitting bids were: G.E. Marshall, Inc. of Valparaiso for $189,000; Chem Check, Inc. of Hebron for $107,800; C. Lee Construction Services, Inc. of Griffith for $123,762; Environmental Cleansing Corp., of Markham, Ill. for $94,270 Integrated Environmental Solutions, Inc., of Westchester, Ill., for $99,500; Indiana Earth, of Osceola, Ind., for $148,600; American Demolition Corp. of Elgin, Ill., for $149,975; Pavey Excavating of LaPorte for $124,456; Green Demolition Contractors of Chicago for $127,150; RV Sutton of Chesterton for $143,395; Actin of East Chicago for $182,500; and Gary Material Supply for $185,000, .
In other business, the board also approved a change order for the demolition contract for the Castaway Motel on U.S. 20. RV Sutton received the original contract for $28,500, but asbestos was found in the building and must be remediated. The cost is an additional $6,450 with the work being completed by a licensed asbestos removal subcontractor.
