PORTAGE | Two men were taken into custody Thursday in connection with a theft from a vehicle after one was injured and left blood evidence behind.

James Wilkins, 21, of 5762 Blossom and Sean Roberts, 21, of 5798 Creekview face charges of theft, unlawful entry and criminal mischief.

The pair are accused of breaking a window on a Ford Ranger truck in the 2600 block of Monnier and stealing a car stereo and speakers, according to police.

After finding a large amount of blood in the vehicle, police said they contacted Porter Hospital and discovered Wilkins was seeking care for a laceration to his forearm. Wilkins initially denied committing the crime and claimed he hurt himself by punching a mirror.

The stolen items were found in Roberts' vehicle parked outside the hospital at which time Wilkins admitted to breaking into the vehicle because the owner owed him money, police said.
