PORTAGE | The body of a 15-year-old Portage boy missing in Lake Michigan since Sunday night was found on the shoreline about a quarter-mile from the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site where he disappeared.
Gene Davis, conservation officer for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, said Dean Christy, an Ogden Dunes resident and member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, was walking on the beach at 4:45 a.m. when he found the body of Corey McFry.
The discovery ended two days of searches for the teen by air, land and water by multiple agencies.
Officials said McFry was swimming with friends when he disappeared in the water during a rip current advisory. He either stepped off a sandbar or was swept from it by 3- to 5-foot waves.
Davis said the discovery of McFry's body brings satisfaction to those involved in the search.
"We absolutely hope it provides some closure and comfort to the family," he said.
McFry would have begun his freshman year at Portage High School later this summer.
