PORTAGE | Reconstructing the County Line Road and Central Avenue intersection likely will begin next year.
The Board of Works on Monday awarded a contract to American StructurePoint of Indianapolis for construction management and inspection duties on the project. The cost of the contract is $135,222.
That contract came after the Indiana Department of Transportation awarded Walsh & Kelly Inc. of Griffith the construction contract on Nov. 6. The cost of that contract is $1,097,324, just below the engineer's estimate of $1.17 million. It was lowest of six bids received by the state for the project.
The project has been a long time in coming to improve the intersection and was delayed due to land acquisition issues, including condemnation action on some of the 13 parcels.
The city received a $1.2 million federal highway safety improvement grant and is sharing the 10 percent local match requirement with Lake Station.
The project will remove a hill at the intersection and add lanes to the two presently on the Portage side to meet with the four on the Lake Station side of the intersection.
