PORTAGE | The Portage Park Board on Monday welcomed an old face back.
The board approved the hiring of Colin Highlands as the new assistant superintendent/sports coordinator.
Highlands had worked for the Parks Department as sports and recreation director for two years beginning in 2005. A 2001 graduate of Portage High School, Highlands is the son of the late David Highlands, a longtime city councilman.
Colin Highlands holds a degree in parks and recreation management from Indiana University. After leaving Portage in 2007, he went back to school and obtained his masters in public affairs from IU in 2010.
For the last 10 years, he has worked for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in its public policy division, stationed at the Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton. His first day in Portage will be Oct. 29.
Highlands replaces Dave Byers, who resigned the post last month to take a position in another community.
"I am very much looking forward to working for the city again," said Highlands, adding his two primary goals will be to improve the quality of life in the city and bring people together.
