PORTAGE | The Redevelopment Commission approved the purchase of 12 tippers to outfit six trash trucks for automated trash and recycling collection.
The contract was awarded to Best Equipment of Indianapolis for $30,449. Other bidders were Pyramid Equipment of Rolling Prairie at $31,470 and Link Environmental of Winamac for $33,865.
The equipment should be in and installed in the next 30 days. The city will be switching to automated trash and recycling collecting beginning Jan. 1. Residents will receive 96-gallon totes for trash and recycling. The automated trucks will be able to lift and empty the totes.
In other business the board approved a contract with Roadsafe Traffic Systems of Crown Point to stripe roads recently crack-sealed. Those include portions of Central Avenue, Willowcreek Road and the roads in AmeriPlex at the Port. The cost is $40,448.
The commission also approved the replacement of tile with carpeting in some offices at the University Center for a cost of $9,128 and the replacement of landscaping around the center from natural grass to flowers and plants for $9,722.
It also approved preparing documents and seeking bids for the demolition of the Castaway Motel on U.S. 20. The purchase of the property will be closed on Monday. The commission bought the shuttered property for $160,000.
