PORTAGE | Both the city's fire and police departments will be receiving some new equipment thanks to the Portage Redevelopment Commission.

The commission this week approved the expenditure of more than $100,000 for items or repairs needed for both departments.

The police department requests, presented by Chief Troy Williams, totaled $73,582 and includes: a license plate reader four-camera system to be installed on a Dodge Charger and will have the ability to read over 300 license plates per minute at a cost of $31,255; a speed monitor message trailer costing $17,950; a mobile repeater for the SWAT truck for $3,500; 10 radar units at $1,250 each and a digital video recording system for the booking room and update for the detective bureau, costing $8,377.

Fire department requests, presented by Assistant Chief Joe Calhoun, approved were: $1,000 for bay lighting at Station 1 and $3,240 for bay lighting at Station 2; $12,909 for gutter repair and ice bars on the roof of Station 1; $1,500 for flag lights at Station 1; $800 for door repairs at Station 2; $1,100 for a rear ladder on Engine 3; $1,500 for carpet at Station 2; $1,800 for six mattresses; $3,500 for furniture at Station 1; $1,000 for landscaping at Station 2; $750 for bedding; $1,800 for refrigerators at Station 2 and $800 for a washer at Station 2.

Commission member Sue Lynch asked Calhoun about continuing mold issues at Station 1 and why funding for its remediation had not been requested.

Calhoun said the mold issue at the some 10-year-old station, which is also the department's headquarters, has been a continuing issue.

"We are still trying to establish the cause and the cost to re-mediate it. We are not prepared to bring it to you yet," Calhoun said.
