PORTAGE | The Redevelopment Commission on Wednesday approved contracts for the construction of a new Portage street department facility.
Gariup Construction received the general trades contract for $3.1 million; Mechanical Concepts received the plumbing contract for $126,500; Gatlin Plumbing and Heating received the mechanical contract for $139,000 and Circle R Electric received the electrical contract for $158,870.
The total cost of the project is $3.6 million.
Scott Cherry, of The Skillman Corp., said each of the contracts was awarded to the lowest bidder and the project is under the estimate of $3.7 million.
The project will construct new buildings at the street department's site on Hamstrom Road. It is being funded through a tax increment financing district bond. Construction is expected to begin sometime this fall.
The commission also awarded contracts for crack sealing and stripping of roadways within the TIF district. Those roads include Central Avenue and Willowcreek Road.
Scodeller Construction, of Wixom, Mich., received the contract for crack sealing at a cost of $80,580. Air Marking, of Rochester, Ind., received the contract for stripping the roads at a cost of $84,780.
Director of Public Works A.J. Monroe said a better quality product, an epoxy paint instead of a regular paint, will be used to stripe the roads this year. Many of them were stripped last year, but faded quickly.
