PORTAGE | An attempted purse snatching in the laundry detergent aisle of Walmart on Tuesday afternoon landed two men in jail, Portage police said.
Police responded at 4:30 p.m. to the store at 6087 U.S. 6.
According to authorities, a Portage man heard a woman scream, "Help. Help. He's got my purse," from an adjacent aisle. When the man ran to the laundry detergent aisle, he saw Charles Reed with the woman's purse in his hands, police said.
Investigators said Reed attempted to run and the man wrapped his arms around Reed's back to prevent him from escaping. The two men then began wrestling each other to the ground and Reed allegedly struck the witness.
Others, drawn to the altercation, assisted the man by holding Reed down until loss prevention and authorities could arrive, police said.
Reed, 19, of Gary, was arrested and charged with felony theft and a misdemeanor count of battery, according to authorities.
A second man, Charles McCloud, 20, of Lake Station, who apparently was with Reed, was found to be wanted on a warrant out of Lake Station.
Reed was transported to a local hospital complaining of pain, released and then taken to Porter County Jail. McCloud was transported to the Lake Station Police Department, authorities said.
