PORTAGE | A pharmacy technician at a local drugstore was arrested Tuesday morning after police said she admitted stealing about 4,000 hydrocodone pills for her own use.

Samantha Newbeck, 27, of 5720 Chapman, Portage, had been stealing 20 to 40 pills each shift she worked at Walgreens, 5995 U.S. 6, since June, according to a Portage police report.

A loss prevention manager for the company reported the theft. The manager told police she had been alerted by the store two weeks ago about shortages of hydrocodone and alprazolam. She set up a surveillance camera in the pharmacy Nov. 21. The video showed Newbeck taking the medication and putting it in her pocket, authorities said.

According to the police report, Newbeck admitted to both the loss prevention manager and police she had been taking the pills for her own use. She told police she had numerous medical issues including a bulged disc in her back and became dependent upon the medication to stop the pain. Newbeck allegedly told police she took 10 pills a day.

Newbeck was arrested on a theft chargeĀ and transported to the Porter County Jail.
