PORTAGE | Crisman Elementary School Principal Scott Hufford doesn't want to take a lot of credit for recently being named the Indiana Association of School Principals District 1 Elementary Principal of the Year.
It is, said Hufford, not a recognition of him, but of his school, the teachers, staff, students and parents.
"I am just really blessed. I work with an incredible staff. I am surrounded by incredible people who give their everything every day," he said.
Hufford has been Crisman's principal for about three and a half years. A Portage native and alumnus of Portage High School, he has also served as assistant principal at Fegely Middle School and a science teacher at Portage High. He has been employed by the district for about 20 years.
Hufford said they received word of the recognition early in April. The next day, administrators, family and staff threw a surprise celebration. His name is now put into consideration for Indiana Elementary School Principal of the Year along with 11 other district winners. The winner will be announced in November.
"For us, as a school, the key is that everybody here is doing our best. It is validation that we are on the right track," Hufford said about the recognition, adding that his school has a high rate of parent participation and registers continuous improvement on standardized testing.
"This is an incredible school and an incredible place to be," said Hufford.
