PORTAGE | A man and woman, arrested on several drug-related charges Thursday, attempted to hide evidence from police on their bodies, officers said.
Elaine M. Rodriguez, 23, of 572 Ravine Drive, Valparaiso, was charged with dealing a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic needle, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia. Christopher J. Petretta, 19, of 6630 Costello, Portage, was charged with possession of a hypodermic needle and visiting a common nuisance.
The two were stopped in the rails-to-trails parking lot at Central Avenue and Samuleson Road at 1:40 p.m. Thursday after a complaint of reckless driving.
The two admitted to police they were heroin users and had just returned from purchasing a dozen "bags" of heroin in Chicago. They also admitted, according to the report, of using the heroin prior to returning to Portage.
Upon investigation, Rodriguez allegedly told police she had hidden heroin bags on her body and then removed a plastic bag containing smaller bags of heroin from her body.
When Petretta was searched at the Porter County Jail, jail officers reportedly had Petretta remove a hypodermic syringe from his body.
