PORTAGE | The staff at Midwest Family Federal Credit Union benefits local charities by wearing jeans on Fridays. Throughout the year, each employee donates a portion of their paycheck into the special Jeans Fund. Money raised in 2013 will be given to The Friends of Portage Township Foundation, The Porter County Pet Project & Kibble Kitchen, Gabriel’s Horn, and the Backpack Program.
"We’ve been contributing to the Jeans Fund since we moved into our new building on Willowcreek in 2005," said veteran staff member Caro Trathen. "I like our program because collectively we can help more people and organizations than if we gave on our own. I’m always surprised by how much money the employees raise. We like to wear jeans, but that’s not our motivation for donating. It’s more like a little perk.”
"The credit union often sponsors local organizations, but this is different," said marketing director Jan Zurek. "What we have here is a group of people—not a business—that choose to give back to their community. It’s inspiring."
