PORTAGE | A house at 5873 Stagecoach Road suffered extensive damage early Thursday morning in a fire.

Fire Chief Tom Fieffer said the department was called at 4:37 a.m. and when firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the roof.

Because there are no hydrants in the area, Fieffer said they struck a tanker plan with Ogden Dunes and Burns Harbor providing tanker trucks at the scene.

"They made an excellent stop," said Fieffer, adding only about 1,500 gallons of water was used to put out the blaze. Residents were home when the fire started, but were able to get out. There were no injuries.

Fieffer said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but will likely be deemed undetermined because of the amount of damage to the home in the area of the fire.
