PORTAGE | Officials are investigating the cause of a fire Monday that damaged a home at 5228 Terry Ave. in Portage.

Assistant Fire Chief Joe Calhoun said the fire was called in at 5:29 p.m. The first unit on the scene, arriving four minutes later, found very heavy fire coming from the living room, he said.

Initially, a police officer said he thought he heard noises coming from within the house. A hose team and search team were sent in, but the house was unoccupied.

The homeowner, an elderly woman, arrived home while firefighters were battling the blaze, Calhoun said.

Calhoun said there was "fairly significant" heat and smoke damage throughout the house.

South Haven Volunteer Fire Department assisted on the scene, and other local departments covered city stations.
