PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | Firefighters were working early Monday to put out a blaze at a barn at 739 W. 700 North, just south of Portage.
Brian Mosley, assistant chief for South Haven Fire Department, said the fire started at about 10:20 p.m.
It was unclear late Sunday what started the fire.
According to the owner of the property, two horses died in the fire.
Victor Maldonado, 37, said he and his family were outside when they realized the barn was on fire. He opened the gate and 14 horses escaped. Two horses refused to get out of the barn, he said.
"I worked nine years on my barn. It went down in 20 minutes," Maldonado said.
Mosley said the fire was contained to the barn that was destroyed by the fire.
A firefighter from South Haven and a firefighter from Ogden Dunes were treated from heat exhaustion, Mosley said.
There were no other reported injuries.
More than a half-dozen departments assisted with fighting the fire.
