PORTAGE | Five teens were arrested late Tuesday night for damaging a storefront window with a slingshot and then fleeing police.
The five, all boys ages 13 and 14 years, were charged with criminal mischief and resisting law enforcement.
Police responded to Pawn King, 2692 Willowcreek Road, about 10:41 p.m. Tuesday after a glass break alarm was activated. Upon arrival the officer saw several subjects running from the area, jumping over fences and continuing through a residential neighborhood on Walnut Street.
Police found three of the teens hiding in the front yard of a home on Walnut Street. The three were taken to the Portage police station. Homeowners in the area called police, spotting another teen "sneaking around and hiding out" in the area. Police located that teen and then found the fifth teen at his home in the area.
The teens told police several had told their parents they were staying at the homes of the other boys and had left to walk around town. One of the teens had a slingshot. One boy told police they were shooting a a pole in the parking lot and had no intention of damaging the building. They told police they ran because they were scared. Some told police they had recently been in trouble for breaking into Fegely Middle School, according to the report.
After meeting with parents, the teens were released and the report was forwarded to the Porter County Juvenile Probation Department.
