PORTAGE | Everyone is invited to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 6540 Central Avenue in Portage, for a FREE Chili Cook-Off and Concert by Don Wharton on Saturday, October 26, beginning at 5 p.m.

The evening will begin with the cook-off in which cooks from St. Peter and neighboring churches will present their best chili recipes for sampling.

Christian singer/songwriter Don Wharton is endurance personified, having performed over 3,000 concerts (at least one concert in all 50 states) since 1979. His encouraging and uplifting style has inspired thousands of people to greater service for Jesus Christ.

Wharton's versatility has given him the opportunity to share his music with a wide range of audiences. He has opened for such Christian artists as Carman, Michael Card, Jessie Dixon and Don Francisco. He has also worked with 60's recording sensations Paul and Paula and acclaimed actor Beau Bridges, as well as performing the first Gospel concert at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. on September 29, 1998. His variety of musical styles reflects a central theme of living life and faith to the fullest.

Wharton is a tremendous story-teller and will keep everyone enthralled with his tales. His presentation is appropriate for all ages.

He recently chronicled his ministry exploits in his first book “Another Year Travelin.'” The book includes his August 13, 1993, survival adventure while returning from a mission trip to the Russian Far East. Wharton and six others were on a twin-engine Piper Navajo when it plunged into the Bering Sea near Nome, Alaska. By a miracle, all seven survived 35-70 minutes in the near freezing water.

There is no charge for the event. If you wish, you may donate to a free-will offering to support Wharton’s ministry.

Wharton will also help lead the worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 27.

For further information about the evening or services, please call St. Peter at 219-762-2673.
