PORTAGE | St. Peter Lutheran Church will hold a free chili cook-off and concert Saturday with Don Wharton at 6540 Central Ave.

The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with the cook-off in which cooks from St. Peter and neighboring churches will present their best chili recipes for sampling.

Wharton is a story-teller and his presentation is appropriate for all ages.

He chronicled his ministry exploits in his first book “Another Year Travelin.'” The book includes his August 13, 1993, survival adventure while returning from a mission trip to the Russian Far East. Wharton and six others were on a twin-engine Piper Navajo when it plunged into the Bering Sea near Nome, Alaska. By a miracle, all seven survived 35-70 minutes in the near freezing water.

There is no charge for the event.

Wharton will also help lead the worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
