Now, I know you hear me talking about being a disco diva on occasion but there was a song that made me sing at the top of my lungs when Randy and I were first dating in 1984. You see, my husband is five years younger than me and when we started dating, I was just going to date him for a while just for the fun of it. Little did I know that three months later he would ask me to marry him and a year later we were married. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper was my mantra back then; and boy did I.

When I received an email a few weeks back from a friend, the song came bouncing back again, this time it was about just girls having fun. This invite was just for the ladies, no men allowed. No offense guys; sometimes we just need a little "Mama Mia" time. I am referring to the Tri Kappa, Zeta Mu Chapter’s, Hat’s Off to Tri Kappa Luncheon and Style Show set for May 5 at Duneland Falls Banquet Center, 1100 N. Ind. 149, Portage.

Doors open at 11 a.m. with the Bazaar Boutiques, which is just loaded with all kinds of vendors that would appeal to all kinds of girls. Jewelry, purses, scarves, clothes, candles and much more to satisfy what you desire and right before Mother’s Day, too. At 1 p.m. the luncheon will commence with the style show, with Fashions by Dune Clothiers, and you will enjoy this show.

I’ve had the pleasure to know many of these ladies that put together this every year and they definitely have a heart for Portage. Last year, they gave away $10,000 to about 20 not-for-profits and scholarships for college-bound Portage seniors.

Tickets for this event are $40 per person and are still available. Don’t miss out on this wonderful event where girls can just have fun and help our community at the same time. There is also still time to sponsor an ad in their ad book for your business or contribute to the beautiful baskets they raffle off every year. For tickets, ads, or donations please call (219) 309-0434. Quick, do it now girls.

One quick note about Portage Rebuilding Together. The volunteer applications are out at Menards/Contractor’s desk, City Hall, South Haven and Portage Libraries, South Haven Legion Post 502 and Portage Legion Post 260 and the VFW. We need all kinds of volunteers for the build day on April 27, skilled and unskilled. Make sure you get your app in right away so you can get your free T-shirt. We always feed our volunteers very well from breakfast to dinner. Give yourself the best gift of seeing those owners smiles after a job well done.
