A favorite song of mine from the 60s is "Summer in the City." The song described the sights and sounds of the people and the city in the summer. While the calendar says that summer isn’t official until June 21, come out and experience a hot time in your own backyard.

The second annual Portage Township SummerFest starts from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Haven Hollow Park, 330 W. County Road 700 North. It is a fundraising initiative for the growth and development of the Portage Township Parks and is truly the hottest ticket in town this summer and “Always Father’s Day Weekend."

The main stage features a Beatles Tribute by Chris and Lou, The Difference, Eaten Alive, Jason Jakes Band, Chad Burton Band, Mr. Right, <11, DreamZ, Allen Wronko Band, 4 Us Cool Kids, Tekila Rose, Red Rebel County, Lexi Elisha, SonDay Glory and Jack Straw.

New this year, Portage Community Theater's talent show will be at noon Saturday on the main stage.

The Mejer Family Stage will be featuring local entertainment like Bonner Senior Center Choraliers and Dancers, Northwest Cheer Elite, George’s Exotic Animal Show, James O’Connor Martial Arts, All Star Angels, Toni’s Dance Academy, Jazzercise, PTS Elementary Honor Choir, NWI Gymnastics Center and the South Haven Fire Department.

But the entertainment does not stop there. There will be a Petting Zoo, Water Wars, Bounce Houses, a great carnival and much, much more. Food and craft vendors galore and don’t forget the beer garden to wet your whistle with your favorite libations.

Admission is $5 but is free until 3 p.m. and today is the carnival preview from 5 to 10 p.m. Discounted wristband ($15) sales for a day at the carnival end today at noon so get on over to Portage Township Trustee, Brendan Clancy’s office for them now.

Thanks go out to all the SummerFest sponsors including Mejer, NIPSCO, Holiday Inn Express, Portage Mayoral Ball Committee, Reeder’s Auto Service, NWI Federation of Labor, Rivalprint, USW Local 6103, Circle R Electric, SHE of Indiana, Bloomfield Mechanical, Great Lakes Port of Indiana, Rhame and Elwood, NWI Entertainer, Bounce N Around, Alec Chase Designs, Best Glass Mirror and Shower Door, Cender and Co., Centier Bank, Horizon Bank, Family Express, Gary RailCats, Delta Painting, Grant Street Monuments, Hatch Construction, Ironworkers Local 395, Kovenz Memorial, Mike’s Tree Service, NorthShore Health Centers, Osan and Patton, Portage Ace Hardware, Portage Exchange Club, Porter County Conservation Club, Portage Liquors, Pruzin Funeral Home, Rees Funeral Home, Office of John Hill, Farm Bureau Insurance, and Randy and Robin Wilkening.

Please don’t forget Father’s Day is this Sunday. Wherever your day takes you; please remember your dad for the things he has done for you. Life is too short to waste time brooding about past experiences, make sure you make your Father’s Day memorable for that special dad in your life.
