At times I get questions from people who live here and are moving here, asking the difference between Portage and Portage Township.

The answer is always the same; the city of Portage, the town of Ogden Dunes and the unincorporated areas including South Haven make up Portage Township. Each of these areas have services and governments that are needed for that particular entity and they all share the Portage Township Schools.

It should be a well-known fact by now that the fire department services in these three communities vary but they all have mutual aid agreements to back each other up. That, for me, is very important because as the buildings get bigger and more go up in this fair land, we need many men and women to be right in there helping put out that inevitable fire or saving that life.

While Portage has a full-time Fire/EMS Department; Ogden Dunes and South Haven have volunteer Fire Departments. South Haven does maintain a full-time Advanced Life Support ambulance crew as well. South Haven Fire Department is under the jurisdiction of Portage Township Trustee, Brendan Clancy.

A volunteer by definition is a person who takes on a service or duty without compensation. To me a definition of a volunteer is priceless. People who have the passion to help others just because it makes a difference in someone else's life are the people that continue to enhance our quality of life.

And quality of life is one thing that people look for when they are relocating to an area.

Which brings me to the reason I bring up all this information. The South Haven Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a golf outing on Aug. 24 at Duck Creek Golf Course, 638 N. County Road 770 North to raise money for an honor guard. An honor guard is to represent and honor fallen firefighters and to display flags at ceremonies and special events in the community. The money raised from the golf outing will be used for uniforms, flags and other items.

Golf information includes $75 per golfer, 9 a.m. shot gun start, four-person scramble, 18 holes of golf with a cart, hot dogs on the course for lunch and dinner after the golf. They need golfers and sponsors for this outing. Sponsors for each hole are only $50.

Golfers can register by emailing Eric Wood at ewood@southhavenfire.com or call (219) 759-3919 or (219) 608-7290.

South Haven is thought to be one of the largest township entities in the state and these fine fire fighters do their best to keep all of township and surrounding areas safe.

Come on out and support our volunteer firefighters with a round a golf and a whole lot of fun.
