PORTAGE | The Portage Township School Board will set the date for the 2013 graduation during its meeting Monday.
The board has debated changing the date and time from the traditional 2 p.m. Sunday ceremony after concern was raised about this year's graduation. Member Cheryl Oprisko had said her mother-in-law couldn't attend her daughter's graduation because of the excessive heat and that others had been affected.
Superintendent E. Ric Frataccia said a committee at the high school has recommended changing the graduation date to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. That date has been suggested because there are no athletic events or tournaments scheduled for that date; it would give counselors time to finish checking transcripts; the heat of the day would have diminished; more teachers could attend and all high school students would finish at the same time.
However, Frataccia said, his administrative team also brainstormed in an effort to resolve the issue and are suggesting having the ceremony at 6 p.m., Sunday, June 9.
Frataccia said that no matter what day the board chooses, some people won't be happy. But, he added, it is important to make a decision soon because certain items regarding graduation must be taken care of this fall.
Board members, during discussion, seemed to favor the Sunday evening ceremony. They will make the decision official during their regular meeting on Monday.
