PORTAGE | Grandparents' Day was a hit at George L. Myers Elementary School.
Although all grade levels were awaiting the arrival of their grandparents, the first-graders were especially excited. The total number of grandparents in attendance toppled the 100 mark.
Grandparents treated grandchildren to books from the annual school book fair and stressed the importance of reading and the value of a good education to their grandchildren.
Grandparents wrote notes of endearment in their grandchildrens' journals and their grandchildren made them ribbons and projects sprinkled with their first-grade touches. Some grandparents were interviewed while others were entertained with poems and songs.
A highlight of Grandparents' Day in Diane Zuick's first-grade class was having Lilie Wise, Patrick Hernandez' great-great-great-grandmother in attendance. She talked about reciting poetry in school, 80 years ago, when she attended school in Mississippi.
