PORTAGE | With a few strokes of her brush, muralist Theresa Channell-Moore worked to bring to life an exhibit at the Portage Community Historical Society's Alton Goin Museum.

Free-handing a woodland landscape, the Valparaiso native painted the scene Friday behind what will be the museum's Native American exhibit.

Channell-Moore recently returned to Valparaiso after living in the East, where she began painting murals. Moving back last fall, she learned of the historical society's project after a trip to the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University.

Once finished, the Native American exhibit will be updated.

It's one of several exhibits the historical society is revamping before its opening weekend, April 5 to 7. The museum, at 5250 U.S. 6, will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 5 and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7. It will remain open each Saturday and Sunday during those hours and by appointment Fridays by calling (219) 762-8349.

In addition to their exhibits, the Indiana Historical Society's traveling exhibit Who Do You Think You Are? will also be on display that weekend.

Society president Carl Fisher, who organized the first meeting of the society in 1987 when he served as superintendent of the Portage Parks Department, said several exhibits are being reorganized to mark the group's 25th anniversary.

"We are trying to awaken people's interest in the history of Portage and Portage Township," said Fisher, adding that some exhibits will be more hands-on and interactive this year.

In addition to the Native American exhibit, the museum contains exhibits on education, public safety, military, politics, early life and early settlers. The adjacent Trager farmhouse will also be open as well as the barn, which houses larger farm implements and an early fire truck.
