PORTAGE | The Portage Redevelopment Commission last week approved a contract with Holladay Properties to manage the city-owned regional office building.
The building, constructed in 1993, is occupied by offices of the Northwestern Indiana Regional Plan Commission and Northwest Indiana Forum. Since its construction, the property has been managed by the Portage Park Department and city employees have maintained the building.
"We are not property managers; we are not good at that," said Mayor James Snyder, who chairs the commission.
Holladay Properties will be paid $10,000 annually to manage the building. The contract calls for them to arrange necessary services and repairs such as landscaping and lawn maintenance. The commission will pay the costs incurred to complete those services.
Economic development adviser John Shepherd said the company will do complete inspections of the building, which will be helpful in any future lease negotiations.
Snyder said it is difficult to determine whether the arrangement will save "dollars and cents" for the city, but it will free up city employee time to better maintain city parks and other properties.
