INDIANAPOLIS | The Indiana House honored the 10 girls of the state champion Portage High School gymnastics team Thursday for their achievements on and off the mats.
On March 16, Portage edged Valparaiso High School by half a point to win the school's second state gymnastics title, thanks to outstanding final round scores on the bars by sophomore Madison Kurtz and senior Mackenzie Barcelli.
State Rep. Chuck Moseley, D-Portage, the sponsor of House Resolution 67 honoring the team, said Barcelli deserves extra praise for also winning the state individual all-around title.
"I am very proud of these young women," Moseley said. "Their accomplishments in gymnastics are really amazing and just fantastic."
Moseley said the team members are also champions in the classrooms at Portage High School with a combined 3.33 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
The 100 House members stood and applauded for the team after unanimously approving the resolution commemorating the state title.
