PORTAGE | The BP gas station at the Portage plaza of the Indiana Toll Road was robbed at knife point early Thursday, police said.
According to Indiana State Police, at about 3:30 a.m., someone robbed the gas station at the 1 South Toll Plaza at the 22 mile marker.
According to police, a black male, described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, wearing a gray hoodie, dark jeans and black tennis shoes, came around the counter inside the gas station and brandished a knife at the lone attendant.
The employee received non-life threatening lacerations to their forearm. The suspect took about $600 and fled on foot through the local exit onto Plaza Road in Portage.
Police believe the suspect may have fled in an unknown vehicle in an unknown direction.
State police were assisted by the Portage Police Department and the Indiana State Police Crime Scene unit. Some evidence was recovered at the scene.
This was the second robbery at a toll road plaza in Portage in two weeks. On April 13, the Hardee's on the north side of the toll road was robbed by three men who pulled a shotgun and ordered a clerk to give them cash.
No one was injured in that robbery, but police then also believed the suspects exited the toll plaza onto local roads into Portage.
Anyone who may have any information about Thursday's robbery is asked to call Trooper Ronald Davidson at the Indiana State Police Toll Road at (574) 206-2931.
