PORTAGE | Fourth and fifth-grade students at Jones Elementary competed Friday in the school's annual Declamation Contest.

The students competed for two trophies in each grade.

The finalists chose their own subjects from historical speeches, poems, humorous monologues, play auditions and even fairy tales, said fifth-grade teacher Julie Whitten, who along with teacher Karmo Leuthart and other instructors helped to organize the event.

Students worked on their presentations for six weeks, competing in semifinals, and Friday gave their presentations before an audience of third, fourth, and fifth grade students, as well as relatives.

"The program gives kids an opportunity to present themselves in front of an audience in a really positive way," said Jones Principal Mitch Miller. "It's one of the highlights of the year here at Jones," he said.
