PORTAGE | A Lake Station man was arrested early Saturday after he was stopped by police with three underage girls allegedly looking for a motel room, police said.

Oscar D. Hernandez Gutierrez, 18, of 2520 Dekalb St., Lake Station, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of alcohol by a minor.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, police saw two vehicles parked in front of the closed Cast Away Motel, 5400 U.S. 20.

Two 18-year-old Portage Township women were in the first vehicle. One told police she had gotten a call from her 15-year-old stepsister asking her to meet along U.S. 20 so the 15-year-old could find a motel to rent for the night, police said.

The 15-year-old was in the second vehicle with two female friends, ages 16 and 15 and Gutierrez, who was driving, police said.

Police said Gutierrez told them his plan was to "party" with the three girls, find a motel room and engage in sex with one or more of the girls.

The girls told officers they thought they were just "hanging out" and drinking with Gutierrez, police said.

Officers found an unopened bottle of rum in Gutierrez's vehicle along with what appeared to be marijuana and a marijuana grinder, police said. Officers also found Xanax, for which Gutierrez admitted he did not have a prescription, police said.

Officers also found marijuana and a smoking pipe on one of the girls, police said. That girl was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, visiting a common nuisance and possession of alcohol by a minor.

The other two girls were charged with visiting a common nuisance and possession of alcohol by a minor. The juveniles were released to adult guardians at the scene.

Gutierrez was taken to Porter County Jail.
