PORTAGE | A Portage man is facing multiple charges after crashing his car Wednesday night in a residential neighborhood and fleeing the scene.
Moises Reynaldo Sanchez, 26, 5430 Central Ave., was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of paraphernalia, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident following an accident about 9 p.m. in the 3200 block of Willowdale Road.
Witnesses told police they heard a crash, went outside and found a green sport utility vehicle flipped over and on fire in a driveway, wedged between two unoccupied vehicles.
One witness said he saw the SUV traveling at high rate of speed on the residential road before striking a utility pole on the southwest corner of Willowdale Road and Buckey Avenue, splitting the pole in two.
The witnesses told police they saw the driver crawl out of the wreckage. The driver, later identified as Sanchez, was bleeding from the face, the witness said, but fled the scene before police arrived.
Sanchez was traced to his Central Avenue address and police found him allegedly hiding in a closet inside the house.
Police found cocaine in the vehicle and a smoking pipe outside the vehicle among debris from the accident. Sanchez also allegedly admitted to police to drinking alcoholic beverages before the crash.
Sanchez was taken to Porter Regional Hospital for his injuries. After being medically cleared, he was transported to Porter County Jail.
