PORTAGE | A Portage police officer was struck in the head with a bar stool late Monday night trying to escort a man out of a nightclub.
Brandon Blanton, 27, of Yorktown, Ind., was charged with battery to law enforcement, criminal trespass and public intoxication.
According to the police report, just before midnight Monday night, off-duty officer Robert Crecelius was approached by a bartender at Marko's, 2385 Willowcreek Road, to help remove a man, later identified as Blanton, from the bar because he was intoxicated and causing a problem.
Blanton refused Crecelius' request and when Crecelius presented his badge to Blanton, Blanton picked up a bar stool and flung it towards Crecelius who attempted to shield himself by turning his back to the stool. Crecelius was struck in the back of the head causing a small laceration and pain. Crecelius did not require medical attention.
When other officers arrived, Blanton was handcuffed, arrested and transported to Porter County Jail.
