PORTAGE | A Jackson Township man was arrested after police said he crashed his car and left his friend seriously injured in the passenger seat.

Eric Stone, 38, of Jackson Township, faces leaving the scene and drunken driving charges.

Portage police responded to a single-vehicle crash about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 6500 block of Robbins Road.

Police said the driver was nowhere to be found, but his passenger, Joshua Lopez, 29, of Portage, was unconscious in the passenger seat.

Lopez was removed from the car by Portage Fire Department medics and taken to Porter hospital in Valparaiso. His condition was not known Wednesday afternoon.

Police said about three hours later, an officer was flagged down by Stone, who was walking along County Road 950 North. Stone said he and Lopez had a couple of beers at a South Haven-area bar and he was taking Lopez home when they crashed, police said. Stone said he wanted to turn himself in, police said.

Stone had watery, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and had a blood alcohol content of 0.1, police said.
