PORTAGE | A Portage man has been charged with being intoxicated when he drove an SUV into a South Haven house on Thursday.
Joseph Tanner, 33, of 5404 Tumbleweed, faces three misdemeanor drunk driving charges and a misdemeanor count of criminal recklessness, according to court documents
The two most serious offenses each carry a potential sentence of up to one year behind bars.
A resident of the house in the 600 block of Newport Road told police he and his wife were thrown from their bed shortly before 6 a.m. when the vehicle slammed through the front of the building and barreled into their bedroom.
Their infant daughter, sleeping in a crib, was buried under debris as the SUV hit a dresser, which then landed on top of the crib.
No one appeared to suffer any serious injuries, but were shaken by the incident.
Porter County Sheriff's Department said at the time Tanner and a passenger in his vehicle were taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
